Ness Bank

Ness Bank runs for about 400m on the east side of the River Ness.
It is 1-way for most of its length (from Ness Bank Church to Cavell Gardens).
There are 26 trees beside the river (23 on the footway, 3 on the riverbank).

The normal footway width should be 2.0m.
The absolute minimum width should be 1.5m
At an obstruction, this minimum can be 1.0m

3 trees leave a clear 2.0m width.
9 trees leave a clear 1.5m width.
7 trees leave a clear 1.0m width.
3 trees leave below 1.0m width. (0.70m to railings, 0.73m to railings, 0.99m to kerb)
In most cases, the wider gap is on the kerb side of the tree.
This exposes the footway user to a drop of 15cm to 20cm at the kerb edge.

In addition, the maximum crossfall should be between 1:100 (1%) and 1:50 (2%).
The maximum acceptable crossfall is 1:40 (2.5%).
Two trees present crossfalls of 7% and 8%. Another is 15%.
This is made even worse where tree roots have raised and distorted the footway surface.

At least 6 of the trees would represent a hazard to an average wheelchair user.
It is recognised that there is no definition for an average wheelchair user.
But even a single tree causing a hazard means that the whole route is not inclusive.

It should also be noted that there are no usable dropped kerbs.
So there are no opportunities for a wheelchair user to temporally transfer to the roadway.

1-way with no cyclingcontraflow
so cyclists cycle on footway
Cars will often overtake cyclists
so contraflow cycling shouldbe possible
